MOVEMENT: Day One
Writer: Jordan Buzzy Photographers: Jordan Buzzy & Leonard Beck
Another Memorial Day weekend has come and gone here in Detroit; did you get your Techno fix? This was Mode’s second year covering the annual MOVEMENT Electronic Music Festival, hosted by Paxahau in Detroit’s own Hart Plaza. The festival features over 100 acts of world class dj’s and performers, art installations, and a music technology room featuring new hardware and software used for djing and electronic music production. Not to mention some world class people watching. The 2014 festival was filled with sunshine, great performances, and a very relaxed atmosphere compared to years past. But the chill summertime vibes did not make the festival any less exciting. Acts like The Martinez Brothers, DJ. Psycho, & Flosstradamus could be found dancing around on and off stage and received an equally kinetic response from their fans. A few new “stages” were featured at this years festival. Ford and Sennheiser sponsored the “Silent Disco Stage;” a unique experience where the dj pumps music through sets of wireless headphones rather than the ear shattering speaker stacks which most festival goers are used to. The result was a very relaxing and personal experience with those around you. Detroit native Kevin Saunderson, who is credited as one of Techno’s primary creators, presented “Origins,” a take over of the Made in Detroit stage on day three. The stage featured a wide variety of acts from founders of the genre like Eddie Fowlkes to Dantiez Saunderson, Kevin Saundersons up and coming son, who played one of his best sets to date. Kevin calls Origins “A celebration of the originators, torch bearers and next wave creators of techno – and their cross-generational influence on each other and the evolution of one of the most important musical developments of the past 27 years.” (more here: http://www.originsoftechno.com/)
