Those of you who traveled north of the D to the DTE Energy Music Theater on July 17th were met with total sonic brutality and probably wouldn’t have had it any other way. A fiery Skeleton lord, hardcore parking lot mosh pits, and world class metal are a few of the things we experienced at this years Mayhem Festival presented by Rockstar Energy Drink.

This years festival featured a host of metal gods including the likes of Trivium, Korn, Mushroom Head,  Darkest Hour, Cannibal Corpse and many others. Included amongst these well respected artists were the respected men and women of the armed forces who were being recognized and supported by several veteran and military organizations. Check out the Metal of Honor  page to learn more.

Despite the number of bands in their “double digits” most of the crowed was seeing these musical giants for their first time. Age and era were melted away in the midst of shredding guitars, killer blast beats, and head on lyrics. This was especially apparent during Korn’s performance of “Freak On a Leash”, a track released in 1999, which caused the crowed to erupt during the scat vocal solo.

Wether this was your first Mayhem Festival or your eighth; one thing is for sure, you’re likening going to make it for next years festival. Now if you’ve never been, you had better find your way out next year and learn how Detroit gets down.
