Uniroyal Promenade grand opening

It has always been the mission of the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy to create a walkable family friendly riverfront from the Belle Isle Bridge to the Ambassador Bridge that started 20 years ago. With the Uniroyal Promenade section connecting the Belle Isle Bridge with the rest of the previously build areas which is a good portion of their dream. Many of the first riverwalk sections fell in the middle of the targeted stretch due to the properties availability. Connecting to the Belle Isle bridge was no small feat. Just listening to the speakers you could hear the conviction of the people involved in this project.

The Detroit Riverfront Conservancy, dignitaries and community partners speaking at the ceremony was

Matthew Cullen, Chairman, Detroit Riverfront Conservancy

Robert Davis, Retired, Senior Advisor, Michigan Department of Transportation

Mayor Mike Duggan, City of Detroit

Wendy Jackson, Managing Director, The Detroit Program, Kresge Foundation

Terry Rhadigan, Vice President of Global Communications and Corporate Giving, General Motors

William Smith, Chief Financial Officer, Detroit Riverfront Conservancy

Mark Wallace, President & CEO, Detroit Riverfront Conservancy

Of the many sections and parks created thus far, this is the most exciting thus far for me since it solidifies more of a completed stretch. Along with one of the hardest to obtain due to the properties owners involved. The Ralph C. Wilson, JR. Centennial Park that is currently being built looks to be the most ambitious section. They researching some of the best parks around the country to match their energy and usability. I always dreamed of using that property for my industrial art park design concept. I can’t wait for this park to be completed. It looks to be world class destination.

After the ribbon cutting everyone took a celebratory walk down the new 1/2 mile Uniroyal Promenade to Mt. Elliott Park just past the Belle Isle Bridge where there was music, food, merch, and carnival type rides for the community to enjoy.

Detroit Riverfront Conservancy needs your help. Building the walkway is just a small part of what they do. It takes a lot of money to maintain the riverfront and have ample security to keep it a clean safe family friendly destination.
